White-tailed deer are common in and around the DMV. The only real hazard that deer pose to humans are vehicle collisions. Keep yourself and the local deer safe by following these steps:
- Always be alert when driving.
- Be extra vigilant at dawn and dusk when deer are most active.
- Use your high beams at night.
- If you see one deer, there are likely more around. Slow down and remain vigilant.
- If you see a wild animal in the road, do not swerve to avoid it. Continue driving straight and put your foot on the brakes. You cannot predict which way the animal will move, so if you swerve, you are more likely to hit it.
- Always obey the speed limit. Deer collisions are less common and less severe at lower speed limits.
We can all create a safer environment for the community and the local wildlife.
