Ducks

Mallards are the most common type of duck in DC. They eat grains, seeds, and insects. They form monogamous pairs and lay about five to eleven eggs in each clutch. Once the female lays her eggs, the male will leave. The female raises the ducklings as they grow.

If you find a duck nesting in an unsafe location, please contact us at 202-882-1000 so we can get you in touch with our Duck Watch Coordinator.

If you find a sick, injured, or orphaned duck, please contact us at 202-882-1000.

Wood ducks are another species of duck in DC. They are a Species of Greatest Conservation Need. Wood ducks eat vegetation, seeds, and insects. They are monogamous and tend to lay ten to twelve eggs per clutch.

If you find a sick, injured, or orphaned Wood duck, please contact us at 202-882-1000.
